Ekphrastic Writing Workshop

Remaking the Gallery: An Ekphrastic Writing Workshop

DATE: August 7th, 2021

TIME: 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Open to high school students and adults

Trish Harris, facilitator

In this workshop, writers will give voice to works of art on display in the museum. Ekphrastic writing is a vivid way of re-creating, and entering a descriptive dialogue with, a work of art. We will learn how to study and respond to the action and elements in visual art, extending and interpreting them to create something new. Participants will respond to visual artifacts that elicit a unique response, and expressive genres might include poetry, microfiction, lyrics, or micromemoir. Each workshop will include readings from the body of ekphrastic poetry.

Trish Harris is a curator, writer, and artist specializing in nineteenth century American work across genres. She has organized and curated several exhibitions focused on the intersections between literature and visual art.  She curated the transmedia Remaking Moby-Dick project, including its 2013 media installation and performance in Sweden. Her poems, stories, and micromemoirs appear in McSweeney’s Online Tendency, Cortland Review, Sundog Lit, and Brevity. By day, she directs tutoring services at Troy University.
